Some Context:
I am a police officer in a city(building?) that seems to be connected by staircases and not streets. Real life type buildings and public areas all connected by staircases somehow.
Dream:
Many police floors are not responding. Everyone is confused and nervous. Our current police station was visited by the Chief. <She is probably the Chief of Police for our city, but is only referred to as the Chief (also a longtime friend)> Priority is to get her to a safe location. We take a staircase down and continue into what looks like a home repair store with tall isles and a bunch of shoppers in the way. Some over hear us talking too friendly coming from the staircase and misunderstand the situation. I go to explain while the others continue on. One shopper eventually changes topic and mentions their family in <forgotten address> has stopped returning their calls. Normally I would say there are many floors not responding and we are working to control the situation, but my dad lives on that same floor. I go to investigate. I go up stairs to a nearly pitch black floor. Someone hears me coming from behind a metal gate and immediately turns and comes in my direction. They are alone, silent, and in the darkness with no light. I call out, "This is the Police! Please respond!" No response. They force the gate open. "Stop! I am authorized to use force with a deadly weapon!" No response. I back up into the staircase and back down to the middle platform between floors. They follow. "I will fire!" They put their foot on the top step. I fire over their head. Bang! It's deafening in such a closed space. Not even a flinch but another two steps. I fire twice more and they go down. My hearing comes back and I hear more footsteps but still no voices. I run down to the next floor that's almost as dark, but is open to a grassy area. There is an ogre next to a single park light that throws a mace at me. Luckily it misses. I fire a couple times not knowing if they hit and continue my retreat further down the stairs while calling for backup.
